Fondation Cartier: Mathématiques, un dépaysement soudain

Du 21 octobre 2011 au 18 mars 2012, la Fondation Cartier présente l’exposition Mathématiques, un dépaysement soudain, une création originale conçue en collaboration avec l’Institut des hautes études scientifiques (IHÉS), sous le patronage de l’UNESCO, et avec le concours de la commission nationale française pour l'UNESCO. Pour cette exposition, elle a ouvert ses portes à la communauté des mathématiciens et sollicité des artistes familiers des lieux pour les accompagner et donner ainsi à voir, à écouter, à faire, à penser, à interpréter les mathématiques. En convoquant les mathématiques entre ses murs, la Fondation Cartier fait elle-même l’expérience du « dépaysement soudain » formulée par le mathématicien Alexandre Grothendieck.

Mathematics: A Beautiful Elsewhere

From October 21, 2011 to March 18, 2012, the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain will present the exhibitionMathematics: A Beautiful Elsewhere, an exhibition developed in association with the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques (IHÉS) and under the patronage of UNESCO. For this unprecedented event, the foundation has opened its doors to the community of mathematicians and asked artists with whom it has worked closely in the past to accompany them in order to create opportunities for seeing, hearing, doing, thinking and interpreting mathematics. By bringing mathematics into its premises, the Fondation Cartier is itself undergoing the “sudden change of scenery” described by the mathematician Alexandre Grothendieck.
